Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend 2010 was so much fun! Having just flown in from Virginia 12 hours earlier, Kanoa & I made sure not to miss the 2nd day of the Celebration Weekend.
For only $16 ($1 off for advance purchase or biking to the event – which we did from Downtown Palo Alto!), we got a fun sampling of what the West has to offer. Being that Sunset Magazine “shares the best of life in the West”, spending time at the CW gives visitors an opportunity to experience the West all in one place.
One of the highlights for me was learning that Seoul on Wheels was an exhibitor! (See my past blog “seoul on wheels failed. carnitas torta passed.“ about my failed attempt to introduce Kanoa to their Korean BBQ goodness one day in Emeryville.) Shortly after entering and signing up for the 12pm Wine Seminar on Washington Wines, we followed our noses to the array of food stands and food trucks. Almost immediately I saw the Seoul on Wheels’ truck far back in the left. I grabbed Kanoa’s hand and practically dragged him over there. One Ribeye and one Spicy Pork Korean BBQ taco later, Kanoa understood why.
Next on our list was the 12pm Wine Seminar. Hosted by Sara Schneider, Sunset’s Wine Editor and a representative from the Washington Wine Commission (whose name eludes me at the moment) the seminar was held in a beautiful courtyard within Sunset’s campus, which had never been open to the public before. For $10, we were able to sample 3 whites and 3 reds. It wasn’t an educational or pretentious seminar by any means. Rather we swirled, sniffed, and tasted while listening to all that Washington’s wine country has to offer (at the momen Washington has over 400+ wineries!). It was very fun to blind taste and hear everyone’s thoughts on the notes and what each wine might be. Out of 6 wines, I guessed 4 correctly
It was a good seminar and I know have a few wineries on my list for whenever I make my way to Washington.
Is it time to eat again? We walked passed Weber’s “How to Grill a Perfect Burger”, after seeing everyone have so much fun and smelling their creations we had to make our back to the food stands. A savory sausage and corn on the cob with salt, butter, and parmesean cheese sufficed us plenty.
I think the best food samples by far was Tillamook. Maybe it’s because I have an obsession with cheese or maybe it’s because they had grilled cheese sandwiches, 3 different cheeses, and 1 cheesy sausage to sample? Whatever the reason, I sure enjoyed it. I also got my photo snapped by Tillamook for entry into their Photo Contest, in which the lucky grandprize winner gets a year’s worth of Tillamook Cheese! How exciting!
Well, I could go on and on about how great the Celebration Weekend was but I’m hoping my pictures will speak for themselves. Can’t wait for next year!!!
