If Disney World is the happiest place on earth for the kiddies, then Calle Laurel (a.k.a. Tapas Street) in Logrono, Spain is the happiest place on earth for foodies.

About a 4 hour drive north from Madrid and a 2 hour drive south from San Sebastian is the La Rioja wine region.  Logroño, the capital of the region, has one of the most distinguished culinary traditions in Spain. With over 50 tapaterias located within a 4 block area, near the town center, it was an unexpected and amazing stop for my husband and I.  While on a tour of the Eguren family wines in Paganos, we had learned about “Tapas Street” in nearby Logrono.  As described to us Calle del Laurel was an L-shaped street, with Travesia del Laurel, filled with back to back tapas bars.  With nothing on our agenda for dinner, we knew we just HAD to visit Tapas Street on our last night in La Rioja.

Tapas Street was crowed with people on a Thursday night. People waiting in line, people eating at the bar, people eating standing up, people eating on the street, and people drinking everywhere.  A typical order was a single tapa or one serving.  My husband and I visited 6 bars within an hour.  The best part?  Together we spent less than 30 EUR and we were filled with tasty bites and amazing wines.

Unfortunately, my memory eludes me and I haven’t been able to locate my scratch paper with the list of all the tapas bars we visited.  But when I find that little piece of paper, oh yes I saved it, I will update this blog.

The first destination on our honeymoon was Valencia, Spain.  Valencia is the third largest city in Spain.  Home of the supposed Holy Grail and Europe’s largest aquarium, L’Oceanogràfic, Valencia is also home of Paella

I was more than ecstatic to learn my husband had booked us at a beautiful beachfront hotel, Hotel Las Arenas Balenario Resort.  Beaches, history, and paella?  This was a great start to our honeymoon.

Two days after our wedding my new husband and I left for our European honeymoon.  Our trip to Europe was both our first time to the continent and our first vacation, togethe, longer than 5 days.  Being that he’s in the restaurant industry, we never have a chance to get away for extended periods of time.  We’ve become accustomed to frequent 3-day weekend trips which has sufficed our hunger for travel in the 5 years we’ve been together.  However, being that this trip was our honeymoon, the boss let him get away for 2 weeks and a few days :)

Our honeymoon was supposed to begin in Spain.  A delayed flight, cancelled flight, and re-routed flight later we ended up at CDG.  With a few hours to spare, we took our flight attendant’s advice and hopped on a train to St. Michel.  We didn’t have time for the Eiffel Tower but we did have time to see the Notre Dame Cathedral, have lunch, and grab a chocolate croissant.

Our quick sample of Paris was a nice little taste of future vacations to come.
